Early Turnarounds no Problem for Volunteer Boys, West Ridge and Gate City Girls on Day Two of Tri-Cities Winter Classic (2025)

JOHNSON CITY – Early turnarounds were the order of the day for day two of the Tri-Cities Winter Classic Saturday at Freedom Hall.

The second annual event is organized and managed by Tri-Cities Christian coach Tyrone “Mugsy” Smith.

Volunteer 59, Oak Hill International 31

Less than 12 hours removed from a home conference win over Claiborne, Volunteer started the day with the victory over Oak Hill International.

“Took care of the one last night, that was our main focus,” said Falcons coach Zac Crawford. “That was our main focus, being a conference game, but good to see the guys were awake and active and had some energy about them. Most of them play AAU and they are used to those kinds of turnarounds.”

The Falcons had already secured the league win over the Bulldogs, so whatever transpired the next morning was all gravy…breakfast gravy.

“Whatever happened here this morning, we were going to be ok with. I love competition. The guys love to compete and get after it. Appreciate Mugs and Tri-Cities putting all this together for us even if it was an 8:30 tip,” smiled Crawford.

After playing even for one period, the Falcons broke the game open in the second period to lead by a dozen at halftime. Owen Miller dropped 11 of his 14 points in the pivotal period.

Lucas Gilliam pounded home a pair of dunks to finish with a game-high 15.

“Lucas has found an aggressive bone in his body. It’s good to see that come out of him.” said Smith.

Owen Tullock finished with 13 points and Griffin Head for the Falcons.

After a painful conference home loss to Science Hill Friday night, a 14-hour wait to get back on the floor was excruciating for the Wolves.

“I was concerned about the quick turnaround, but honestly, that was the best thing for us,” said West Ridge coach Kristi Walling.

Sophomore Carter Jones said not playing until next Friday after a conference bye on Tuesday wouldn’t have settled well either.

“That would have been terrible,” said Jones. “It was good to have a quick turnaround and get the game in and not have to dwell on last night.”

West Ridge controlled the game against the original Ridge from start to finish.

“I was super proud of them,” added Walling. “It could have gone either way. They could have come out with their heads down, but they came out and played hard.”

Jones led the way for the Lady Wolves, scoring 16 of her 23 points in the first half.

“That kid wants it and she works for it,” Walling said. “There are a lot of kids that want it, but don’t work for it. She works for it.

“She’s a kid that after practice goes and gets extra shots up or does an extra workout, that’s what impresses me the most.”

West Ridge led 25-15 at the break. After missing her first four three-point attempts, Allie Reilly knocked down two straight to start the third period.

“That was huge.” noted Walling. “Maybe hit a couple of those last night, maybe the game goes a different way. Her coming in back-to-back was huge for us.”

Millie Shelton added seven points and grabbed four rebounds. Randi Smith paced the Lady Wolves on the glass with six rebounds to go with five points.

Danica Southerland led the Wolfpack with 11 points. Kyiah Perry finished with 10.

The Lady Blue Devils turnaround at least came after a conference win, and road work at that.

“We had a tough game (at Abingdon) last night, got home late, but I felt our energy from the start was good,” said Gate City coach Kelly Houseright. “That’s good because you can make whatever excuse you want to, you have to find a way to show up and play.”

And the tip time was somewhat requested by Houseright as her son’s Gate City squad was set to host David Crockett later in the evening.

“I knew we had a road game,” explained Houseright. “They asked us to come play and we had a game open. I did request to play earlier, I didn’t know what time. Not really great scheduling on my part, but it was a great opportunity for us to play in a good arena and good facility against a good team.”

Star senior Adyson Gibson didn’t record a first half field goal but tickled the twine eight times from the field in the second to finished with a game-high 24 points.

“She (Gibson) was on and off the floor the first half because of foul trouble,” said Houseright. “Really was never able to get going and get into the flow of the game.

“In the third quarter she was actually on the floor for a period of time and played a little bit more free. She wasn’t contending with foul trouble every time down the court.”

Addison Keller filled in when Gibson was on the pine and hit for nine points.

“Addison did a good job for us when Jayden was out of the game,” added Houseright. “She’s getting some confidence and that’s definitely going to help us.”

Adrianna Lane chipped in with seven points for Gate City (9-1).

Volunteer got 12 points from Scarlett McClaran, who made 6-of-6 at the foul line, including four straight on a foul/technical foul situation in the second to keep Volunteer close.

Emilee Mailloux tossed in nine for the Lady Falcons.
